Watercolors are tough.

This was a warm up to re-familliarize myself with watercolor for a project I'm working on. A six panel series to illustrate a famous japanese myth, Momotaro (Peach Boy). As much as I enjoy the watercolor process, I'm very hesitant with it and have very little idea on how to do backgrounds without spending an insane amount of time on them. I hope throughout this I'll gain more confidence and knowledge in using it.

  1. This is like really cool work here, my first visit to your blog.

I dinker around with just watercolors from time to time and also have pretty much of same proble with adding in background with just the such alone, however I find I like to to used both ink and watercolors combine when I get serous that is, other than that when I am just messing around I try all sorts of styles which is what I am currently doing.

  2. are you just using the colors out of that little pocket palette? if so you're going to have to show me how you got that nice gray color

  3. For backgrounds I always do them first before anything I do in the foreground. If you are doing a sky or a large fill area I would recommend wetting the whole area evenly (after mixing your colors) and then applying paint as evenly as possible, usually with this you can get pretty good flat areas or transitions between colors, then over the top of the large washes I then get into detail. Watercolor is a tricky beast!
